Sixth
Form

The Sixth Form at UCS is an exciting and fulfilling time, academically, pastorally and socially. The majority of our Sixth Formers come from our own Year 11, with a very significant number of students joining us from other schools to complete their secondary education with us. As such, our Sixth Formers are a varied group, with an astonishing range of interests and ambitions. There is a strong sense of community and mutual respect amongst our students, and they are outstanding role models for younger pupils. In this way, we believe that a UCS education is about more than a set of exam results. It is a preparation for life after school.

All students choose four subjects in the first year of the Sixth Form from a choice of over 20 subjects. In addition to the subjects offered at GCSE level, Sixth Form students can also choose to study Economics, Politics, Philosophy, History of Art, and Psychology.

In the second year students may choose to continue with all four to A Level, or to specialise in three. A good number continue with three and, in addition, take up an Extended Project Qualification. Teaching groups are relatively small – usually ten or so students per class – and students also receive one-to-one help as and when required from their teachers.

In addition to subject lessons, students have some time dedicated to private study at school (with unrestricted access to our excellent Library and ICT facilities). One afternoon a week is devoted to sport and fitness, using the school's outstanding facilities for indoor and outdoor sports. Friday afternoons are given over to enrichment activities; these encompass service in the local community, or university preparation classes whereby pupils choose to follow a bespoke course that relates closely to what they want to study in higher education. There is also an extensive programme of PSHE lessons, and regular lectures from a range of well-known and thought-provoking visiting speakers.

Each year, our students achieve outstanding results and go on to study at some of the top universities in the UK and abroad. Wherever they go, UCS students settle in well and adjust quickly to the demands of undergraduate and graduate study. Every student receives bespoke, individual, expert support and guidance with his or her university application, regardless of the proposed destination. We also host an annual Higher Education conference. All those who leave UCS after their Sixth Form studies move on to university, art, music or drama colleges, or take a gap year before beginning their degree courses.

Over 80% of our leavers go on to study at Russell Group universities and each year 15% of our students take up places at Oxford or Cambridge. Students are encouraged to apply to the top universities for their course specialism resulting in a broad range of disciplines and destinations.  Our  most popular include UCL, Manchester, Edinburgh, Durham, Bristol, Nottingham and York. In addition, throughout their time in the Sixth Form, our students have the opportunity to gain work experience via our UCS Career Connections initiative, and we hold a dedicated Careers Evening for Year 12 students.

All UCS leavers automatically become part of our alumni association, the Old Gowers Club, which is run from the Development Office in the Senior School. The OG Club enables all alumni to stay in touch with the school, and to build social and professional links with our active community of over 4,000 Old Gowers.
