The UCS Music Department runs a packed schedule of more than 30 ensembles and choirs, including a full Symphony Orchestra, a 50-piece Concert Band, separate ensembles for string, woodwind and brass, and an extensive Chamber Music programme. Also, Jazz has long been a specialism and the provision for Pop Music has expanded considerably.

On a weekly basis the department delivers more than 250 instrumental and singing lessons, and over 150 pupils are regularly involved in co-curricular music.

Our busy concert diary stretches to 30-plus events a year including a lunchtime concert series, solo recital evenings for all ages, end-of-term ensemble concerts and opera evenings, plus an annual Carol Service. What’s more, a fully staged musical takes place every other year, fundraising gala events provide showcase opportunities for senior Jazz musicians and singers, and Music tours are arranged. UCS Music’s central location also facilitates frequent masterclasses from visiting professional musicians and a Professional Concert Series.

The department is housed in a purpose-built Music School and benefits from outstanding facilities and resources including five classrooms, two ICT suites equipped with 24 MACs, 12 practice rooms, and a 200-seater recital hall.

Large-scale performances take place in the 800-seater Great Hall, one of the most charismatic concert spaces in London, equipped with a recently purchased Steinway Model D Grand Piano and a two-manual Walker organ.

In all, there are six permanent members of the Music Department, including a full-time Music Administrator, and 25 Visiting Music Teachers who tutor across the full range of classical and popular instruments.
