Coming soon: 'The Scottish play'

The cast of this term’s Middle School Production are in the midst of rehearsals for their upcoming take on Macbeth.

Shakespeare’s tragic tale of murder and ambition finds new life in this Middle School adaptation in which a group of “mysterious misfits” or witches, in the words of cast member and witch Maya Haim, “pull the strings of the plot”.

Shakespeare’s timeless allure is a prominent aspect of this production. As Maya explains, “We have spoken a lot during rehearsals about how the play’s themes transcend any particular time period and that really is a key feature of the forthcoming production.”

The play also showcases an original score by UCS pupil Joseph Sainsbury, which will be performed live on stage. “The music really helps create a sinister atmosphere that suits the play so well,” describes Year 9 cast member Lucas Sauma, who plays the doctor.

Markus Chartouni, who also appeared in last year’s show The Lord of the Flies, enjoys playing a character with “psychological complexity” in Macbeth. Meanwhile, Luka Moriarty, who takes on the titular role, promises that audiences can look forward to an ambitious production in which he is “delighted” to be playing the lead for the first time.

Tickets for Macbeth are on sale here from today. The production runs from 12th–14th March, starting at 6.30pm on each evening.
