Back to the Pitch: UCS Rugby Teams Kick Off Season

UCS Rugby enjoyed a fantastic and sun-drenched club day last Saturday. Following an action-packed morning of school fixtures, the playing fields were taken over by around 300 Old Gowers, playing and supporting the first home fixtures of the season. Over thirty UCS old boys turned out for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XVs. Having won the promotion last season, the UCS 1st XV have quickly found their feet in Herts Middx Division Two and defeated Tabard in a closely fought encounter, 14-7. The 2nds and 3rds both lost narrowly but put in highly spirited performances in their first outings of the season.

Members of the UCS Cricket, Netball and Golf clubs joined fellow OGs, school parents, staff and friends, supporting the teams from the touchlines, Iced beers, bottomless Pimms and prosecco kept the crowds fully hydrated while a marathon 5 hr BBQ ensured everyone had the stamina for a night of high octane karaoke in the club bar.

For 1st XV player Gabe Hartwell (OG 2020), Saturday was a great day for UCS sports. “It was an incredible turnout and we’re so pleased we were able to get the win. The sense of community and support that exists between all the OG sports teams is fantastic. The clubs provide such a meaningful way of staying connected with the school and keeping in touch with fellow Old Gowers

School deputy head (and longest serving member of staff) Andrew Wilkes was a man in huge demand from Old Gowers all afternoon. “It’s terrific to catch up with pupils I’ve taught over my 35 years at the school. These Club days show what a vibrant, supportive and active community we have at UCS. Old Gower sport brings former pupils together and keeps that relationship going with the school long after they’ve left.
