Third Time’s a Charm for UCS Old Gowers Soccer

Gower Allstars were crowned champions of the Premier MA Camden League on Sunday 5 June.

The league has been very competitive over the last few seasons, but 2011 was to be a Gower year. Following two seasons of missing out on the title, the team, led by Phillip Glyn, secured victory on a tense final day of the season.

"The squad have taken so many knocks this season, none more so than being moments away from winning the MA Cup earlier in the season, which is why winning the title means so much more this year than in others. They all showed great strength of character to bounce back and win their last three games, and can now build on this fantastic achievement in 2011-12", said Phil after the final game.

The success was a result of teamwork and a blend of youth and experience. Significant contributions came from Dave Ossack and Tom Byfield in defence, Ben Caird, Aron Azouz and Paul Sampson in midfield, and Jamie Shamash and Owen Blandy – who netted 23 times in 23 games and won player of the season – upfront. Notable newcomers included Ben Chadwick, Suresh Whittock and Elliot Lowe.

It was a tough season featuring many competitive teams, including the other Old Gowers team, Gower Phoenix, which, led by James Denslow and Jules Norton, also challenged for the title, finishing fourth. Notable new members who had a big impact were Ben Eder and Patrick Gavaghan. The squad will now enjoy well earned a summer break, but have an eye on winning the title again next season. Key to that success will be the introduction of new blood.
