Victory for UCS Old Boys RFC in ‘Grudge Match’ against UCS 1st XV
In the first such fixture in more than twenty years, the School 1st XV took on an under-21 Old Boys side at the UCS playing fields on Saturday 10 December. The newly acquired trophy, to be awarded to the victors, is emblazoned with the words, ‘The Grudge Match’, and the School 1st XV lacked neither effort nor intensity, with the u-21s being hit hard in the tackle by their younger rivals from the first minute.
After numerous raids on the Old Boys line, the u-21s scored a breakaway try by Tom Arnold, and another was added before halftime by Max Barnard. After the break the School scored a well deserved try through scrumhalf Billy Dunmore, who darted over from close range. This made the score 10-7. The Old Boys then upped the pace of the game and two quick tries from Adam Davidson and Andrew Smith-Doctor put the result beyond doubt at 24-10. Billy Dunmore scored a second try late on before the u-21s added a final score through Fawwaz Janjua to run out 31-14 winners. Some 22 Old Gowers were involved in the u-21s, and it is hoped that many of them will be representing UCS Old Boys RFC’s senior sides in the coming years.
Thanks go to Ed Sawtel and Jon Cooke at UCS for refereeing and helping to organise the fixture, as well as to Dave Myers and Gideon Bard of UCS Old Boys RFC for recruiting, managing and coaching the u-21 side. The game was watched by a crowd of 100, many of whom stayed on into the afternoon to watch the Old Boys 1st XV win their league match against Imperial Medicals by a score of 25-10.
