UCS has a thriving music department with a busy extra-curricular schedule and an excellent academic record. Our concert series has over 30 events a year, from informal lunchtime concerts through to main school concerts, allowing performance opportunities for all the school ensembles in addition to solo recitals. Ensembles run within the department include symphony and chamber orchestras, choir, chamber choir and barbershop group, concert band and individual ensembles for guitarists, woodwind, brass, percussion and string players. Jazz is also very strong at UCS, with many small groups and a popular Jazz jam session. Student compositions are also regularly performed by the UCS New Music Ensemble. Individual instrumental tuition is offered in all of the orchestral instruments in addition to piano, organ, guitar (classical, electric and bass), drum kit, bagpipes and singing. The music school has a fully equipped and dedicated computer suite and large ensemble rehearsal room in addition to class teaching, instrumental teaching and practice rooms. We are also fortunate to hold many concerts in the school Great Hall, with its magnificent Walker organ. It is a venue that has been used for recordings and concerts by some of this country's leading professional ensembles. Students from Year 8 onwards are given instruction in the use of Sibelius software as an aid to composition and notation and recording is done using either Sony Sound Forge or Pro-tools. Many students attend the junior departments of the London music colleges and pupils regularly go on to study at Oxbridge, other leading universities and music colleges. The music department has organised tours for the choir, chamber orchestra, symphony orchestra and concert band to venues including Prague, Paris, New York, Ghent & Bruges, St Petersburg and Venice. Visits are also regularly organised to professional concerts in London, some of which are linked to workshops given in school by members of the ensembles. Contact the department at: |
